Mom I made you a quilt

Posted on April 6, 2011

I’ve wanted to make a photo quilt for my mom since 1998 after seeing the movie Stepmom. In this movie, Susan Sarandon’s character made a quilt with photos and other memorabilia for her daughter and son.  It was so beautiful and special.  So, after 13 years I embarked on this quilt making journey. Keep in mind that I have only made a dress (which you can read all about it here) a couple of cushion covers and pajama pants for Viv. I was very nervous and didn’t know what I was suppose to do.

This might sound really cheesy, but I see it as a blanket of memories that surround my mom always. I wanted each block of fabric to symbolise something. Thus, each block was thought out long and carefully. The pictures that I chose resemble some of the best memories over the last couple of years.

So, after about a month of hard word, and let me tell you it was crazy hard work, I bring you the quilt.

Top left:The seashells represent our family holidays to Hermanus, one of our favourite holiday destinations.
Middle row from left: This was used as the serviette covers on my sister’s wedding. Right: My mom and I used to play knots and crosses when I was little. it was my favourite game.
Bottom left: My mom’s favourite flowers are roses. Right: The charms says: Laugh, Love and Special- it sums up my mom in 3 words.

Top left: Love.  Right: She is the key to our family.
Middle row from left: Part of our wedding serviettes. That was the ‘logo’ we used throughout our wedding. Right: It says: ‘my heart, my love’ in Afrikaans (my home language)
Bottom left: The cameo was used at my sister’s wedding. The charm says: I am magical. Which she is. Right: Well, umm, don’t need to explain that.

Me and Viv on our wedding.

My mom, dad, Viv and I visited France and Switzerland in December. It was one of our most memorable holidays. I loved sharing my love for Paris with my mom and dad.

Pics of my brother  and a picture of my parents on their wedding day.

Our whole family at our wedding, including my 90 year old grandma.

My brother, me and my sister.

My mom’s reaction when she first saw it :) Priceless. All the hard work and long hours behind my sewing machine paid off.

Dimensions: 1.25m x 1.5m. Almost as big as me :)

I hope you like it. Pop in tomorrow for a step-by-step post on how to make this quilt. If I can do it, so can you.
