A beautiful chaos

Posted on July 20, 2011

One decor tip that Viv and I live by, is that one needs to be truly in love with a piece of furniture before you buy it! Yes, Viv and I are emotional like that and uses the words love and furniture in one sentence.

We ponder and drool and dream and do research about something for quite a while before we buy it. We make sure that when we invest in a piece it is of good quality and it is something that we really love and not just want/like.

I have been looking for a set of antique Queen Ann chairs for about a year. I saw a couple that was okay, some that I liked, others that almost made the back seat of my car and then I saw these guys…

…and it was love at first sight.

I bought them from an old man who had them for 30 years. He bought them from an antique shop way back then and the previous owner also had it for a couple of years. So these guys are quite old.  They are still covered in its original fabric; it stinks and are covered with stains, but man are they beautiful! I literally hugged them when I saw them. They are made of rose wood and are really sturdy. I have big plans for them, watch this space.

You might have noticed in the sidebar of the blog that I have a category called ‘I heart’. For those of you that haven’t seen it before, look to your right. Scroll down, or up. See it? Good.

There I log all of my favourite items that I love and dream of. The Louis Ghost chair has been sitting there since the beginning of this blog, probably ’cause I know I will never be able to afford one and can only dream of it.

Over the weekend I walked into one of my favourite chair store. (they are very expensive, I can’t afford anything in there, I only go in there to drool over all their gorgeous stuff) And there it was, my precious ghost chair, okay it is not the original Ghost Chair, but her mate called The Victoria, marked off from R 1975 to… wait for it…..wait for it…… drum roll please…. R 199. I yelled, ‘what the bleep’, grabbed it as quick as I could, paid for it and ran out. I was scared that they made a mistake on the price and would realise it and make me pay that ridiculous price.

Isn’t she gorgeous?

Oh gosh, where am I going with this post? My actual idea for this post was not in this direction.

………………………………………………………………………………………

Let’s back track and get back to the title of this post.

Since Viv and I bought Raybelle we have been stocking up on furniture, because we currently own about 4 pieces of furniture and our new house is big and have space for a lot of furniture. We also though that it would be rude to ask our friends when they come over to bring along their own chairs to sit on.

So slowly but surely our small apartment started looking more like a furniture store. We can not reach our dining room table, I can not get stuff out of our server and you have to be really careful when walking around not to knock things over.

It is chaotic but oh so beautiful. Our apartment, which once was clean and tidy now looks like this…

That box on your left has our new chandelier in it and at the bottom a frame peeps out which I got at an antique store.(I have a beautiful plan for it)
My grandma gave me that painting. I can remember it hanging in her house when I was a little kid. It is so special to me. Behind it is a mirror that I got as a gift from an amazing decor shop in Plett.
My gorgeous half-moon table for the sunroom. I took back that little white side table from my parents, it was mine when I was still a student, I have a DIY project planned for it. Even that new crystal bowl doesn’t have a space in my cupboard.

And that is how we are living at the moment, in a beautiful chaos.

Have a glorious Wednesday.

I love the Victorian chairs, the colour of the wood is beautiful!

I had to laugh when I read this post Idonette… you’re going through the complete opposite to me right now! Because we’re downsizing we sold the bulk of our furniture and so now all we have in our living/dining area are 4 chaircrazy “ghost” chairs the TV and a dresser… moved our little round dining table into my office to use as a desk for the next month until we move.

I totally agree with picking furniture carefully as I’ve ended up selling a ton of stuff I bought when we moved to the house in a desperate attempt to fill it. While we definitely lost some money on selling everything I’m making room for some better pieces that I also “love” including an art nouveau furniture set which my family has owned for many years. Just need to get them reupholstered before the big move!

Can’t wait to see more of your lovely purchases – those chairs are beauties!

You and Viv have great taste ! The chairs are beautiful – curious to see it once re-upholstered. Love the way you choose each piece carefully :)

  4. Can’t believe I almost missed the chair post due to internet being down!
They are just FAB!! *drooling* Going to steal them when you not looking.
    And just love Louis’s sister for R 199!! Now that’s a bargain.
