Thanks grandpas

Posted on December 6, 2011

I love having items around my house that have a story to tell. Items that aren’t bought at the nearest decor shop and probably made in China, but things that speak very close to my heart.

Both Viv and I had a really close relationship with our grandpas. They have both passed away, but we have fond memories of them. Viv was even named after his grandpa. They were also both very DIY savvy and made a couple of awesome things in their lives.

I was handed down this mirror that my grandpa made years ago (I forgot to take a before pic, but in the background of this picture you can see the mirror before).

He would probably freak out if he knew what I did with it… But I am not a wood type of person, and it is so well made that I really wanted to put it up somewhere.

So I took out the mirror spraypainted the frame… Royal BLUE!

I grabbed a couple of teaspones and blue-afide (yes that is a word) them too.

Then Viv drilled some holes for me to put up the frame and I arranged the spoons. And voila!!

I wanted something bold and striking on the wall in the scullery, ’cause when we eventually put up the sliding door there, and the door is open, I want the scullery to still look smart and pretty, rather than a typical boring scullery.

Here is a look at it from the dining room..

Viv’s mom gave me this mirror that used to hang in his grandpa’s house:

I absolutely love the shape, but not the colour.

So I removed the mirror…

and spraypainted that baby red.

Yes, another bold frame in our house. We are feeling quite ‘bright’ lately.

She now lives in our showerroom. It was a mission to drill a hole in those porceline tiles. After breaking 2 drill bits, we got a hole and now she hangs beautifully.

We had to choose a colour that will go with our red chandelier in the hallway, because the chandelier is right outside of the showerroom. You can’t see it here, but they look awesome together.

And that is how our grandpas will be remembered in Raybelle (cheesy? yeah, we are kinda cheesy and we love it)
