Q & A: Bathroom Window Treatments
One of the readers asked whether I could help her with a new idea for covering her bathroom window.
There are a couple of things to consider when choosing window treatments; 1) Determine which side the room is facing. Is it facing north or south? It will determine how harsh the room is receiving light/sun. You don’t want to cover your window with thin or bright coloured material or blinds that you will need to replace within 6-months due to sun damage. 2) Natural light needs to flow through. Don’t cover it with thick, dark material. 3) Privacy. You don’t want your neighbor to see your birth suite do you? 4) If you do decide on material, choose it wisely. Don’t buy delicate material that will not be able to handle the humidity in the bathroom. 5) Have fun. Turn away from the old ways and look at new fun, romantic ideas.
I am obsessed with window treatments and believe that it can make or break your whole room. Here are my favorites. Click on the links to view the source.
Blinds will always be popular. It is easy to open and close. Wood/faux wood, aluminum or bamboo blinds are very easy to clean. Only use faux wood because the moisture in the room can lead to severe warping. (Used the word ‘easy’ way too much in one sentence. It’s just that easy)
Film adds that decorative touch to a bathroom. There are so many gorgeous designs out there. It also helps with the whole privacy and light issue. I really love this idea.
I love this bathroom. Don’t you just want to lie in that tub all day and sip on fruit smoothies? ah. Shutters gives that French feel to a room. Depends on what vibe you are looking for, but if you want to create a romantic atmosphere, this is your one. It also filters natural light beautifully.
Why not frost the glass. It will give the same effect as the film, but will be more permanent. You can frost it in beautiful designs.
Cafe curtains are brilliant for privacy on the lower part of the window and leave loads of space for natural light to flow through the top part of the window. These curtains gives a soft touch to the room.
I hope this helped a bit. Do you have any other ideas? Please share with us.
Happy weekend. What are you guys up to? We are going camping. I am really not very fond of that idea. Sleeping in a tent where all sorts of creeping and crawling things can come into. Mozzies. Eating out of plastic plates. Sharing a bathroom with numerous strangers. But nature and I will make peace and it will show me that camping is good. Spending quality time with the Viv and our friends, that is going to be priceless. So bring it on nature!

I like the third one most. To me, definitely the prettiest. It would be my choice for a bathroom.
The second one I find a bit old-fashioned perhaps and when it starts to come loose on the edges it gets dirty. At least, that is my experience every time. Plus a window is mostly supposed to be something one should be able to look through, unless it’s just for light, then you can use frosted glass like the 4th picture. Also typical about prints on glass that I don’t like is the fact that when you look at it from different angles with light shining on it, the brightness of the print seems to change, and that is illustrated exactly by the picture. I would like it a lot more if it would have the brightness of the close-up in picture 2 under any angle.
No I’m not a print man. I’m a Shutter man
and maybe also a blinds man. Clean and easy. And frosted glass is also cool in the right context.
Another possible idea for ‘windows’, but then only with the function to let light come in, are glassblocks. It’s illustrated in this picture, not as windows, but as a wall for the shower.

Also; the usage of plastic tiles on the windows to give a similar effect as glassblocks, but they’re windows so you can open them. They’re made by a company named windecor. http://www.windecor.com/images/bathroom1a.jpg I’m not sure I like it, I prefer using real glassblocks. But the functions of both alternatives are entirely different.

And then there are these shades. I don’t know what they are, it looks like roller shades, but I really like it

and then another reason why I love shades:

that last one should be “why I love shutters.”.
I really liked your post on the bathrooms. Must say, I also like the 3rd one with the shutters. It is romantic and I love the clean lines and especially the white finish. Beautiful.
